Ebola Virus 1976 – A new deadly virus

The first known Ebola outbreak occurred in 1976 in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, causing 318 cases and 280 deaths. The disease is zoonotic, causing acute hemorrhagic fever, with evidence suggesting fruit bats are the main reservoir. Although it affects both human and non-human primates, the major outbreaks have been reported in humans, mostly in Western Africa. The virus spreads from the diseased to non-diseased through direct contact and infected materials. There are 5 species of virus, the most lethal has a mortality rate of up to 90%. In 1976 the index case was believed to be a 44 year old man who had been treated for presumptive malaria in hospital, leading to the outbreak. In sporadic outbreaks since, epidemiological investigations suggest involvement of carcasses of wild animals (bushmeat), including duikers and chimpanzees spread the virus. The last and most deadly outbreak occurred in 2014-16 in West Africa, with more than 28,000 cases and 12,000 deaths, more on this outbreak to comeā€¦ (Singh et al. 2017)
