Microplastics in seafood and the implications for human health

Microplastic are now found in many species intended for human consumption. Plastic particles in the ocean are consumed by wildlife, including fish and shellfish. These animals then enter the human food chain and are consumed by billions of people globally (seafood provides 3 billion people with 20% of their total animal protein intake). While we know humans ingest microplastics, we don’t yet know the impact of the chronic exposure to these plastic polymers on our gastrointestinal, reproductive or immune systems. “Although there is potential for microplastics to impact human health, assessing current exposure levels and burdens is key.” (Smith et al. 2018; Wright & Kelly 2017).
